The UK will host a conference on Somalia on 23 February to pull together international effort.

London

Announced by the Prime Minister in November, the event aims to bring together leaders of key partner countries and organisations, both in Africa and beyond, to help galvanise a common approach to address the problems and challenges of Somalia that affect us all. This includes tackling the issues of piracy, extremism and the underlying causes of instability and conflict in Somalia.

Circus Project with Street Girls

A fascinating project. We are looking for volunteers to join us.

Hargeisa,
Somaliland

The aim is to create a piece of stunning visual dance/circus/theatre over a 5-10 day rehearsal period with around 30 street-girls (15 full-time, 15 part-time) aged between 8 - 18. The majority will be aged 11-13.

The art-form will comprise traditional Somali music song and dance, combining this with radical visual circus/theatre dance to produce a piece of ritualistic theatre akin to the secret sacred dances danced in private experienced by Bill Brookman when working as Guest International Circus Practitioner at a Yeshiva in New York and staged in performances in Kosovo, Sierra Leone and Haiti.

We are seeking volunteers for this and other projects. Details can be found in the right-hand box at http://www.billbrookman.co.uk/foundation/home.html

We are informing people of the most spectacular celebration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the East Midlands. A huge show staged on a massive games board with extraordinary costumes and breath-taking fireworks, Games Time is coming to Loughborough on 9 June, Northampton on 7 July and Derby on 22 September.

Our involvement is not certain due to other commitments.
It is directed by Lea Anderson, the world renowned director and founder of the contemporary dance company The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs, Mahogany, who provide costumes for large outdoor events including the Notting Hill Carnival, and Walk the Plank, leaders in large-scale pyrotechnic events.

Games Time has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK.

The producers are looking for individuals and groups, aged 13 and over, from in and around Loughborough, Leicester and Leicestershire. Experience in dancing or performing isn't necessary but a commitment to the rehearsal schedule is a requirement.

Clowning Workshop Project

An opportunity to learn to be a clown!

The Old Mission Hut, Storer Road,
Loughborough, Leicestershire, UK

The course is aimed at clowns who wish to develop their skills. Often performers can feel they do not have a specific repertoire, or "act" that they, individually or in a group, can perform. The course will give them that.
• Monday: This is only an arrival date. Some participants will have travelled far. We meet for a big meal in the evening.
• Tuesday – Friday: Workshops will take place 10.00 – 3.30 each day.
• There will be space available to work on your own material 24 hours a day.
• We will stage an evening show on Thursday evening with our partners The 101 Performing Arts Group
• Saturday, Sunday: We will take the team out to perform at events in the locality.
• Participants may have to leave mid-Saturday or Sunday because of travel constraints. But we encourage participants to stay as long as possible, even leaving on the Monday.
• We may organise a trip to a local theatre to see an event for inspiration.

Clowns for Haiti members should contact Pete Gannon: peteractionclean@gmail.com +353 872 577 639.
Individuals should contact Bill Brookman: bill@billbrookman.co.uk 01509 236175
